The Phonetics of Pig Latin

Updated: Apr 27, 2020

Want a brain teaser? Try this:

Ouyay ancay akemay ethay estbay ofyay anyyay ituationsay.

Don’t keep reading. Try taking a crack at what this seemingly nonsensical sentence says.

Figure it out? Recognize anything?

This is Pig Latin. Not latin spoken by pigs.

The above says: You can make the best of any situation.

Here’s the basics:

If a word begins with a vowel, just add "yay" to the end.

Ex.: add becomes addyay

If a word starts with a consonant, then take all consonants before the first vowel and put them on the end of the word.

Ex.: consonants becomes onsonantsc

What a time suck, right? Imagine speaking like this. Personally, as a fast conversationalist and reader, lacking in speed tends to infuriate me.

However, perhaps we can start to use it’s complexity to your advantage.

Try to learn pig latin. Text it, write it, and speak it.

Need a way to one up your siblings’ April Fools jokes?

Maybe this is it.

Why not take the time we’ve been given and do something unconventional? No one ever said we had to be normal.

Tays afes, miles, andyay Iyay illw ‘ees’ ouy extn imet.

Innf outyay.
